Cold weather athletes and casual wear consumers need to make good choices when it comes to this critical cold weather gear. Canada Goose and The North Face are some of the top brands for it, but how do you choose?

Well, today we’ll find out.

The North Face vs Canada Goose: Which One is Better?

The North Face and Canada Goose are some of the top brands for winter jackets that keep you insulated and protected from the elements.

By far, Canada Goose is a fashion forward status jacket, with a price range of $600-$3,000, whereas  The North Face is a more budget friendly option, with prices at $200-$1,000. Then again, one shouldn’t think Canada Goose is any less quality just because of its reputation.

The North Face offers a wide selection of winter-wear options, from fleeces, to parkas, to jackets, and heavy-duty coats. Many of The North Face coats and jackets are water-proof and use a specialized fabric trademarked by them, called DryVent, which is engineered to be waterproof and windproof.

The North Face’s thickest coats and consequently, the warmest coats, also have an outer shell attached.

To add to the comfort and protection, their Summit Series jackets have a 800-900 fill power. And in The North Face’s outerwear for more extreme cold, they do use both synthetic fiber and goose down as well as their proprietary fleece.

Canada Goose also offers fleece, jackets, parkas, and coats, but more often than not, you’re going to see their thick, premium winter gear prioritized.

The brand uses a 3-layer waterproof fabric on its  jackets and parkas designed for the most intensely challenging cold conditions, providing complete protection and breathability at the same time. Along with a 4-way stretch to enable full range of motion, but their fill power is only 600-800.

Their hard shell jackets can also be worn on top of other down jackets to prevent moisture from seeping in. Know that ‘waterproof” is the highest level of protection against wet conditions, while “water repellent” is less so and “water resistant’,’ is the lowest level of protection.

Canada Goose is also well-known for their fur-trimmed hoods, which use real wild coyote fur, something the brand has been criticized for in the past. They claim it is tradition, however, plummeting rates of wild-life populations due to hunting bring their ethics into question.

On a more technical note, these fur hoods can get easily matted if not properly maintained.

Both of each brand’s products are well-suited for anything from a brisk winter walk to an intense skiing session. When asking which one is better, the answer comes down to the cost and how long the clothing lasts.

The North Face wins out in price, fill power, and ethical practices, but Canada Goose makes a strong case in durability.

Reviewers have stated that The North Face coats can show wear and be damaged easily after medium-wear. In comparison, Canada Goose products in general have often lasted buyers 10 years worth of intense wear.

So if you’re on a budget, we recommend  The North Face, since it gets the job done without breaking the bank, but if you’re looking to invest, go with Canada Goose.

The North Face vs Canada Goose Warmth

The insulated outerwear of both The North Face and Canada Goose share the same basic anatomy, having a lining, an insulation layer, and an outer shell, but there are differences.  The North Face uses both goose down fill and PrimaLoft, a synthetic material that imitates down, in its insulated jackets rated for colder conditions.

However, Canada Goose uses only goose down fill, while they do use synthetic fiber cloth coated with durable water repellent (DWR)

As a quick reference, here are some notes on the functioning of the 3 essential layers these brands have refined: The liner, the fabric closest to your body, is the first line of defense in keeping you warm.

In some cases, the lining can be made of a heat reflective or absorbent material that can wick away the excess moisture of perspiration which, left to evaporate, accelerates heat loss.

The second layer is the insulating layer made of down or synthetic fiber fill. It insulates by providing minute air spaces where your body’s warmth is captured, and held and is rated in “fill power”-the amount of space taken up per ounce of compressed fiber or down.

Of duck and goose down, goose is the best, lightest, softest and most resilient of insulating filler. A parka, jacket, or coat can either be packed with too much low quality fill or too little high power fill and will not insulate well.

The final defense against the cold comes in the protective outer layer of insulated coats, jackets, and parkas. It breaks the wind and keeps you dry while allowing moisture trapped under the outer shell to vent out the evaporating condensation from inside and keep the fill dry.

The North Face vs Canada Goose Jacket?

Both brands are high quality, however, Canada Goose has historically proven to be more durable than The North Face. That said, The North Face does provide some more affordable comparable options to Canada Goose, providing the proper protection to suit moderate to extreme conditions.

Canada Goose is your best bet if you are looking for a jacket that will withstand really harsh winters, provided that these are dry winters.

The North Face would be the better choice if you want a warm parka or jacket that is also highly weather-resistant. Besides, with ThermoBall jacket series, for those who live in areas where the winters come with heavy rainfall and snowfall,  The North Face is the one to go with.

Therefore, it’s not a matter of which is better of the two in general, but which one is better for you and what you are looking for.

Which Canada Goose is the Warmest?

Snow Mantra is Canada Goose’s warmest jacket. Fitted oversized to provide ease of movement, reaching to mid-thigh, with 2 directional adjustable fleece-lined hood with wire shaper, fur ruff, and fleece lined plackets and neck to guard the face from damage in extreme cold.

The inner sleeves are finished with a stretch ribbed cuff, again, to seal in warmth. Not only is the Snow Mantra usable, easy to move in and layer under, but it has reinforced elbows and has a waterproof shell and reflective strips to make the wearer visible in night and dark conditions.

The North Face Gotham vs Canada Goose

The North Face Gotham Jacket is goose down insulated. Reviews say it’s highly comfortable and fits like a glove.

It performs well for moderately cold temperatures, but steer clear of strenuous activity. Its fill power is 550-a low fill power, though it does have ribbed cuffs and hem to keep out wind and cold.

However, it runs short for a jacket.

While it has two layers of treated fabric to shed water, it is not greatly effective in wet conditions, and is not for use in conditions with extreme cold of durations longer than an hour. It is a decent jacket for moderate dry cold weather and is moderately priced.

Canada Goose offers a similar option with their Chilliwack Bomber. Overall, the bomber is practically an exact match for the Gotham, with the exception of logos and a higher price tag.

Mainly because it’s made in Canada and not China. Both options have great wind-resistance, warmth retention, and even match up in length.

Does Canada Goose Run Small?

A few Canada Goose Jackets run small, but overall, their jackets for the harsh cold run big to allow layering, as well as more coverage. Those meant for more moderate winter weather run smaller for a snug fit.

Are The North Face Jackets True to Size?

Most of the North Face jackets are true to size in the sense that they accommodate for layering, just like Canada Goose. If you’re looking for a slightly baggy style, go a size up, and might we add that The North Face is very size-inclusive, ranging from XS-3XL.

Are Canada Goose Coats Worth the Money?

Canada Goose outerwear is a great investment however they come with a hefty price tag. They are very durable and come with a lifetime warranty, so you’ll enjoy your coat or jacket for a long time.

Canada Goose jackets are also made for cold and harsh winters, If you live in a region with a moderate climate, Canada Goose cold weather gear might be too warm for you.

Is The North Face Gotham Jacket Waterproof?

The North Face Gotham III is waterproof. The parka comes insulated with a 2-layer DryVent shell and sealed seams, as well as a 550-fill power goose down.

This insulated shell keeps water and snow out, while simultaneously keeping moisture caused by sweat from accumulating inside the insulation.

Both The North Face and Canada Goose are good competitors, at least initially. It isn’t really until you get into the details that you notice the differences.

Which is why we say choosing between the two means doing your research and understanding your own personal parameters, like budget and desired durability. Ultimately you’re only going to get what you want out of your next jacket, parka, coat, whatever it may be, as long as you’ve put the consideration in beforehand.
